Meet TMT Automotive.

Robert Lyons had already made it. Lead technician at a Mazda dealership, second in seniority, he was the guy they trusted to train everyone coming up behind him. He walked away from it because the work was changing and the service coming off the floor had lost its heart, and he'd rather build something himself than keep handing people a version of the job he didn't believe in.

The building he ended up with was army tank green, surrounded by abandoned cars, and had no running water inside, which is exactly why it was still available after months of looking. Robert saw a good building under all that and went to work on it, hanging his own drywall and getting it up to code with the city until it was ready; in November 2005, he opened TMT Automotive with not a single client on the books. So he put flyers in his hand and walked Boston Square door to door, introducing himself to families in person so they'd know who would be working on their car, and twenty years later some of those cars belong to the grandchildren of the people who answered.

What he's actually built is a place people can count on for transportation they can trust, which matters more than it sounds like, because a car that runs is the difference between independence and being stuck at home. That's why seniors on fixed incomes get their repairs at reduced cost here and sometimes for nothing, and why prices stay reasonable on purpose, and why his clients keep telling him not to retire on them.
